Parklet? What’s a Parklet?

What does the City of Windsor Heights, Iowa have in common with big cities like Minneapolis, Philadelphia, Chicago, New York, Dallas, and Seattle?

Parklets! The City of Windsor Heights received a grant from the Des Moines Metropolitan Organization to construct the first parklet in the Des Moines Metro. The City of Windsor Heights selected Phillip Vlieger to construct and design the parklet. Parklets will offer another way for businesses to help shape the character of their streets and offer their customers a new experience. A parklet is an extension of the sidewalk over an on-street parking space creating community gathering places, creating more vibrant commercial districts. Parklets are an innovative and cost effective way to add public gathering space to public streets. They serve as streetscape enhancements, providing an economical solution for increased public open space.

On Tuesday, June 27th, join Baru 66 and the City of Windsor Heights from 5 to 7 pm at a launch party for the parklet at 6587 University Avenue, Windsor Heights, IA 50324. Baru 66 will provide complimentary hors d’oeuvres and beverages while supplies last.
